about
I wrote this song after Kobe's untimely death. He was literally my favorite person in LA. My world was shattered. I still can't believe he is no longer physically with us.
After I released this track a few months ago on Bandcamp, I re-worked on this and mixed with Brian Reeves.
I re-release it on Kobe's birthday today on August 23, 2020.
Happy Birthday, Kobe. We miss you.

lyrics
January Morning
(Words and Music by Mari Iijima)
You’re my sunshine
You’re my superstar
You’re irreplaceable
January Morning
(Words and Music by Mari Iijima) English Translation
You’re my sunshine
You’re my superstar
You’re irreplaceable
One January Sunday morning My phone rang rapidly
It was a call to let me know that something has happened to you
I didn’t want to believe anything
I wanted to cover my eyes and ears
It was the beginning of a nightmare I could never wake up from
“Hey, it was just an early April-fool!”
Even if you come back with your playful smile
No one will be mad at you, so please come back to us
You wrapped what really happened in the sky in a veil
And you brought us the most important message of love
You became the absolute legend
It’s been three days yet my tears never dried up
It’s like time has stopped yet our daily lives started moving slowly
I miss you so . . .
You’ll never know how much you meant for us
Please tell me it was just a bad dream and you’ll be back
“Hey, it was just an early April-fool!”
Even if you come back with your playful smile
No one will be mad at you, so please come back to us
The town you loved lost its Sun
In the deepest sorrow
We gather our shoulders and we're becoming one
While shedding our eternal tears all together . . .
We love you, Kobe
